Sustainability

 All About Hevea Brasiliensis

Our company motto is 'Both People And The Planet Matter'.

At Latex Sense, we are committed to producing high-quality mattresses and toppers while minimising our environmental impact and promoting sustainability from supply chain to delivery operations. Our sustainability agenda outlines our efforts and achievements in environmental oversight, social responsibility, and economic sustainability.

Our Approach to a Sustainable Future

Our sustainability approach integrates economic objectives with the potential benefits of social and environmental effects. We benchmark ourselves against industry bodies, establish goals to continuously optimise our business and sustainability goals, and work on a deliverable action plan to meet targets as quickly as possible. Driving our sustainability performance forward through customised strategy execution makes it feasible for our company to implement long-term changes. Our strategy will be reviewed and updated accordingly.

Our Mission

Our main mission is to fully evaluate and eagerly improve our social and environmental impact by obtaining a B Corp Certification, the accreditation has a transformational effect on all businesses globally. Its process brings about a profound change, involving an entire shift in perspective and mindset.

B Corp Certification

We are truly excited to announce that as a business we have already commenced our first steps working on the path to gaining our official B Corp™ accreditation this year, by applying for the B Impact Assessment, which the first step towards achieving B Corp Certification. B Corp. is a coalition of businesses aiming to create lasting changes. We recognise their contribution to tackling globally prevalent concerns, such as disparities in society and the climate crisis.

Entering a community of businesses that share similar values empowers us to address these challenges collectively, enhance our influence, and accomplish real transformation.

We are conscious that it is an accomplishment reserved for a few specially privileged organisations that foster environmental and social transformation through their activities and operations. Therefore, our objectives are to continuously incorporate ecologically sound resources and production strategies into our merchandise range. We will persist in our activity to create and innovate goods that use regenerative and zero-carbon processes. We will further focus on mitigating pollution from logistics while additionally supporting everyone affiliated with the Latex Sense community. We do acknowledge it will require hard works and commitments, which will involve going through rigorous assessment process across our entire business, however, we cannot wait to be honoured and awarded this highly regarded status.

Carbon Measure and Targets

Analysing, managing, and reducing carbon is at the forefront of our business. We are in a process to undertake corporate climate initiative to set up and develop our science-based targets (SBTs) to reduce our carbon emissions and combat the impacts of global warming and adverse climate risks.

Zero Net Pathway Planning

We aim to accurately measure and identify our largest emission sources and make significant changes to greatly reduce our carbon footprint. We collect data across our operations and supply chain to ensure our targets are achievable and determine the obstacles we must address during their implementation.

We work towards setting a Net Zero target by concentrating on minimising our largest emission sources to reach the path to zero net growth. And plan a Net Zero pathway focusing on reducing these largest emission footprints to accommodate strategic growth.

Environmental Sustainability:

Sustainable Material Sourcing

We prioritise the use of natural and renewable materials in our mattresses, with 100% natural latex being the primary component. Our latex is sourced from sustainable rubber plantations that adhere to responsible forestry practices, minimising deforestation and promoting biodiversity conservation.

Natural latex is harvested from the rubber trees Havea brasiliensis, which are grown in tropical climate plantations around the world, including in Southeast Asia, parts of Africa, and South America. The latex is collected in buckets and shipped to large rubber factories, where it is transformed into latex foam. The trees are not harmed and therefore provide a sustainable and renewable resource. In fact, natural liquid latex is a commodity and is publicly traded in stock markets.

Derived from a renewable resource, coconut coir is an eco-friendly material. As a byproduct of the coconut industry, using coir in mattresses contributes to sustainable practices and reduces waste.

Tencel-Purotex covers are made of Tencel fabric, which is a natural fibre extracted from wood pulp. ActiproTM technology is used in the fabric to provide healthful protection against allergens, dust mites, and odours, which helps to maintain a clean, fresh, and healthy sleep environment.

The organic covers are made with organic Merino wool that is GOTS (Global Organic Textile Standards) certified. The organic cotton we use is also GOTS-certified.

Sustainable Products

Natural latex is renowned as ‘white gold’; it is a white milk extracted from the rubber trees that can be turned into very comfortable and useful products—tyres, gloves, and, in our case, mattresses and toppers. Our products are crafted by hand in London and made with 100% natural Dunlop, 100% natural Talalay, or organically certified latex.

The 100% natural and organic GOLS Dunlop latex used in our organic mattresses is certified by GOLS as being 100% organic and natural latex, which confirms that the raw material comes from organically grown rubber tree plantations.

We choose to employ natural graphite instead of toxic chemicals. We use natural graphite, a mineral derived from Mother Nature, as the only natural fire-retardant additive. The graphite has fire-retardant properties, and when mixed with latex, it acts as a fire barrier.

Sustainable construction techniques and materials are used to build the products. Our customers may sleep soundly knowing that our mattresses and toppers are environmentally friendly and green. We are committed to creating eco-friendly latex mattresses without any adverse environmental impacts.

Product Lifespan

Our mattresses are designed for durability and longevity, reducing the need for frequent replacements, and reducing waste. Additionally, we offer mattress recycling programs to ensure responsible disposal at the end of their lifespan.

Social Responsibility:

Fair labour practices

We are committed to upholding fair labour practices throughout our supply chain. Our manufacturing facilities adhere to labour laws and regulations, providing safe, healthy, and fair working conditions for our employees.

Community Engagement

We actively engage with local communities to support social initiatives and contribute to local development. This includes partnering with local organisations on environmental conservation projects and supporting education and healthcare initiatives.

Customer Education

We prioritise customer education on the environmental and health benefits of natural latex mattresses. Through informative materials and online resources, we empower consumers to make sustainable choices that align with their values.

Diversity, Equality, and Inclusion

We recruit and attract new talent through management, development, and employee retention, which is crucial for the establishment of a successful and sustainable workforce. We are looking after people at work. Our employees are an invaluable company asset, and they align with our company's values and goals.

We foster an open company culture that is accepting and inclusive of all employees. We trust that a great example of creating an inclusive and sustainable work environment is having an atmosphere where all workers feel comfortable sharing their viewpoints. We encourage workers to share their opinions by creating a safe space.

Enhance Employee Health and Wellbeing

We use a holistic approach to the mental, physical, social, and financial well-being of employees, which enhances performance and creates an inclusive workplace where all employees share a sense of belonging.

We have included provision for people with physical and mental disabilities, support for menopause transition, bereavement, and pregnancy loss.

Work-Life Balance

We promote work-life balance by offering parental leave for mothers and fathers, by introducing working from home, where possible, and by offering more flexible working hours.

We survey our employees for their insight on mental health, disability, and sense of belonging to shape and strengthen health, safety, and wellbeing organisation policies.

Economic Sustainability:

Long-Term Growth

We believe that sustainability and profitability go hand-in-hand. By embracing sustainable practices, we not only reduce costs and mitigate risks but also position ourselves for future growth and continuous success in the market.

Supply Chain Resilience

We work closely with our suppliers to ensure supply chain resilience and minimise disruptions. This includes diversifying our supplier base, implementing robust risk management strategies, and fostering strong relationships built on trust and transparency.

Innovation and Adaptation

We invest in research and development to drive innovation and stay ahead of market trends. By continuously improving our products and processes, we enhance our competitive advantage and ensure our viability in a rapidly evolving market.

Mattress Recycling Sustainability

We are committed to recycling mattresses. Mattress recycling is an integral part of our sustainability strategy, reflecting our commitment to the environment and resource conservation. We promote a circular economy where materials are reused and recycled to create value for society and the environment. We remain dedicated to continuously improving our recycling practices and collaborating with stakeholders to advance sustainable solutions for the mattress industry.

We shift massive quantities of waste from rubbish dumps, lowering the detrimental impact associated with disposal. Mattresses are bulky items that occupy significant space in landfills and may take decades to degrade, leading to pollution and the release of greenhouse gases. Recycling helps alleviate these adverse environmental consequences.

We proactively recycle all the packaging we use to securely deliver our goods. Moreover, we do not use any synthetic FR additives but only natural minerals to adhere to the UK's FR regulations. We employ natural graphite, a mineral derived from Mother Nature, as the only natural fire-retardant additive in our latex products. We design and construct our product line with natural latex fillings, coconut coir, and steel spring units, which are responsibly recycled and used in different applications, mainly for insulation materials.

Mattress dismantling and recycling gives us the opportunity to retrieve vital components, including natural latex, stainless steel pocket springs, and coconut coir, which can then be used to generate recyclable products. This preserves natural resources, limits the demand for raw materials, and reduces the energy consumed during raw material extraction and processing.

Our Recycling Process:

Collection and Transportation

We collect used mattresses from customers through delivery services. The old mattresses are collected when the new ones are delivered, utilising the same logistics. Once collected, the mattresses are transported to our recycling facility using efficient logistics options to minimise emissions and fuel consumption. The old mattress is then responsibly recycled here in the UK by a specialist recycling centre.

Prevention of Disposal Contamination

The collection and disposal of customers' old mattresses can pose environmental hazards, as they may pollute the soil and groundwater. Thus, we mindfully handle them with great care, avoiding contamination and protecting the health of both the environment and humans.

Sorting and Disassembly

At the recycling facility, mattresses are sorted into different components, such as foam, fabric, metal springs, and wood. They are then disassembled using specialized equipment to separate these materials for recycling. Natural latex, a primary component of our mattresses, is extracted and processed for reuse in house isolation and other applications.

Waste Prevention

We recognise the gravity of responsible waste management and strive to greatly reduce the environmental impact of our products throughout their lifecycle. As part of our commitment to sustainability, we have implemented a comprehensive mattress recycling program to ensure that our mattresses are disposed of responsibly and efficiently.

As all our materials are either biodegradable or recyclable, we can now break them down into their original component parts and upcycle them into new products. Each component used in the production and boxing of our mattresses and toppers is consciously obtained from biodegradable, renewable, recyclable, or organically certified plantations.

Material Recovery and Usage

The recovered materials undergo further processing to prepare them for reuse or recycling. For example, metal springs are melted down and recycled into new metal products, while coconut coir is a renewable resource that has been gaining popularity and is commonly used in gardening and agricultural practices as a soil amendment and potting mix ingredient. Gardeners are increasingly turning to coir as a greener alternative to peat moss for water retention. Unlike peat moss, which takes years to form, coir is readily available from commercial coconuts used in the food industry. Coir breaks down slowly, ensuring the prolonged benefits of water retention. The rest of any residual materials that cannot be recycled are disposed of responsibly in accordance with regulatory requirements.

Social Impact:

Job Creation

Our mattress recycling programme creates employment opportunities within the local community, including jobs in collection, transportation, sorting, and processing. By supporting the growth of the recycling industry, we contribute to economic development and job creation, particularly in regions where recycling infrastructure may be lacking.

Consumer Awareness

Through our recycling program, we raise awareness among consumers about the importance of responsible waste management and the benefits of recycling. By providing convenient and accessible recycling options, we empower consumers to make sustainable choices and contribute to environmental conservation efforts.
